The heroes of the book are residents of rural areas in the territory of the future Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. Here, among the neighbors, relations are not rarely spoiled by a particular envy, which almost everyone is subject to.

Among them there are people who, for the sake of their selfish interests, are ready to sacrifice even their loved ones. Just sell them if they offer a good price for this. During the Great Patriotic War there were cases of betrayal even among neighbors. There were people who committed real courageous acts and were ready to give their lives for the sake of the future of their homeland, their loved ones and acquaintances, just the inhabitants of the same country with you.

In this difficult period, people showed mutual assistance and support in relation to others, although they themselves were in a difficult situation. Many learned the death of their loved ones, some children died with a painful death, sometimes before their eyes. People really learned what the fear of death and prolonged hunger in wartime, what is a difficult post-war time.

There were cases when people ate cats, rats, dogs and even other people who died of hunger or wounds. There were those who, at the expense of his official position, used to have a similar situation for their mercantile purposes. Many simply had the desire for revenge for their loved ones, for what they had to endure. Some of the people who were chuckled with before the war, using them as a necessary object for ridicule and in such an uncomplicated way to cheer themselves up, eventually become those who are falling on all possible and invented sins of the military period.

Moreover, those who accuse them of this themselves thus want to distract attention from their vile acts. It was a time in which there were happy girls, waiting for their guys from the war. The time of mothers who received a notice about the death of their sons. There were people who were forced to live in the occupied territory during the war, and they survived differently in this situation.

The heroes of the book show real warm relations between people that do not weaken over the years, which, not rarely, are capable of only strong persons in spirit. Because being honest, fair and responsible is always not easy. It is easier to be lazy, cowardly, false, hypocritical and envious. Moreover, the choice in the second method of behavior in an individual forms many inferiority complexes.

These complexes often pushes many vile acts. Among which this is impudent manipulation and the use of simple, somewhat naive, and gullible people for their own purposes. A truly good person we are able to make ourselves, by our self-education. Yes, there are those who received similar qualities from their ancestors at the genetic level and in the process of education in the family.

But it is also necessary to be able to always be like that. And this is more complicated. He who could achieve this is capable of warmth. He will not do this for glory and self -satisfaction, because it is morally not acceptable to do otherwise. And we must admit that the Society of Consumption a priori is not able to give rise to such personalities. Because for him this is the worst thing to get out of the comfort zone.

Comfort for him is the receipt of pleasure in which ways.
