Born on February 17 in the village of Zolotkovo, Novosolnikiye District, Pskov region. In the year, he entered the technical school of agricultural mechanization, and then worked as a mechanical technician in the Malyshevskaya MTS Kalinin region. A participant in the Great Patriotic War since June, the young fighter received the first military baptism on the western border.

In the year he graduated from the Lepel mortar school. By February, Senior Lieutenant Leonid Tikhmyanov commanded the battery of the Definite regiment of the mortar brigade of the 3rd Guards Artillery Division of the 5th artillery corps of the breakthrough of the Western Front. His mortar brigade in the army took part in the defensive battles of the Soviet troops in the Minsk direction, in the Smolensk defensive battle.

From April 6, he was elected to the post of chairman of the Tula Regional Committee of DOSAF, was seconded for further service with the abandonment of the Soviet Army in the footage.
